Complete Guide: Toughened Glass VS Laminated Glass

Nov. 21, 2020

Toughened Or Laminated Glass is popular for its sturdy and reliable quality. They have been specially treated to provide the ultimate safety and standard for home and commercial properties.

However, the difference between these two types is usually unknown, and in fact, they can actually provide the same category, while they each provide different benefits and are more suitable for different things.

What is tempered glass?

The strength of toughened safety glass is five times that of ordinary glass. This is achieved by heating ordinary glass at a high temperature (650°C) and then rapidly cooling it down. Compared with ordinary glass, this process makes it harder (hence the name), and the heat and shock resistance are increased by 400% or 500%.

The purpose of the toughening process is mainly to improve the structural durability and thermal strength of the glass, thereby improving its resilience and heat resistance. It is worth noting that this type of glass cannot be recut after tempering. It must be cut off before the toughening process.

Tempered glass undergoes special treatment and will break into small blunt pieces under pressure, which is safer than ordinary glass fragments.

What is a laminated glass?

Laminated glass technically has the same strength as ordinary glass, but there is a plastic interlayer between two 3mm thick glasses to hold them together. The PVB plastic middle layer is a tough resin. If the glass breaks, it will hold the fragments in place, thus providing a safe double-layer design.

For safety reasons, laminated glass must meet specifications, and the transparency of the glass will not change during the lamination process.

What is the difference between tempered glass and laminated glass?

After looking at the difference between tempered glass and laminated glass, it is clear that both types can withstand greater impact and stress, and can also withstand high and low temperatures. In terms of health and safety standards, this makes them ideal choices.

Due to the existence of the interlayer, laminated glass is thicker than tempered glass, so it can provide better insulation and resistance to accidental or deliberate impact or damage. In other words, laminated glass is heavier and more costly than tempered glass, so it is important to weigh what is most important to you before buying anything.

Benefit

The benefits of tempered glass and laminated glass show the main difference between the two:

Thermal or chemical methods used in the toughening process increase strength, resilience, and the ability to withstand high temperatures.

There is a plastic intermediate layer between the two glass plates, if the glass breaks, the pieces can be fixed in place.

Its strength is at least five times that of ordinary glass, which means that it takes a lot of force to break it.

Because it is not easily damaged, the replacement cost will be kept to a minimum or reduced.

If it breaks, it will break evenly into small pieces, so there will be no shards or glass shards.

It can withstand temperature changes, improve sound insulation, and reduce the impact of harmful ultraviolet rays.

It is superior to standard glass in structure and heat.

Easy to color.

Color, transparency, composition, transmittance, and hardness do not change during toughening.

If the glass is used externally, for example in a shop window, it can act as a protective barrier against strong winds and heavy rain.

The glass may be painted RAL color.

Layered designs provide better insulation and can improve your green credentials and energy efficiency.
